The SHSAT (Specialized High School Admissions Test) is an exam 8th, and 9th graders take for admission to New York City's highly prestigious Specialized High Schools. The test is given in late October for 8th graders and mid-November for 9th graders for admission the following school year.

Each of the eight schools that require the test has a cutoff score — a minimum score that students must get to be offered a seat. The test is out of 800, but the cutoff scores for each school vary each year. The Department of Education determines the scores based on the number of applicants and the number of seats available at each school. Stuyvesant High School typically has the highest cutoff score, and Brooklyn Latin School has typically had the lowest.
