Why Take the SHSAT?
Your child's gateway to NYC's elite specialized high schools.
A Free Ticket to World-Class Education
New York City's eight specialized high schools are among the most prestigious public high schools in the United States. They offer rigorous academic programs, exceptional teachers, advanced coursework, and unmatched extracurricular opportunities — all completely free of charge.
The SHSAT is the only requirement for admission. There are no essays, no interviews, no grade-point-average requirements, and no tuition. A strong SHSAT score is all it takes to gain access to an education that typically produces outstanding college placement results and lifelong opportunities.
For families in New York City, the SHSAT represents one of the greatest opportunities in public education: a meritocratic pathway to an elite high school experience that would cost tens of thousands of dollars per year at a private school.
What Makes Specialized High Schools Special
Academic Excellence
Rigorous curricula including AP and college-level courses. Students are surrounded by motivated, high-achieving peers who push each other to excel.
College Outcomes
Graduates of NYC's specialized high schools routinely attend Ivy League universities, MIT, Stanford, and other top institutions at rates far above the national average.
Lifelong Network
Alumni networks from schools like Stuyvesant and Bronx Science span industries from technology and finance to medicine and public service.
Specialized Programs
From Brooklyn Tech's engineering majors to HSMSE's CCNY partnership, each school offers unique programs not available at other public high schools.
Free Education
All NYC specialized high schools are public and tuition-free. The only cost is preparation for the SHSAT itself — an investment that pays dividends for years to come.
Research Opportunities
Students at Bronx Science and other specialized schools conduct real scientific research, often winning Intel and Regeneron Science Talent Search competitions.
